I have cleaned the rad, the thermostat is new and i checked its working, it has a new head gasket, the rad isnt heating up enough to turn the thermo switch on but ...The water pump is pushing water around and it's also heating up/expanding. Coolant reservoir being empty isn't terribly surprising or a key indicator by itself. Burp it properly and drive it and let us know if you get any overheating, bubbles in the overflow tank while idling, after driving, etc. It's not the water pump.Today about a week later, my jeep overheated again. Same thing. High coolant level in reservoir yet low in the engine /radiator. I'm wondering if it's possible the reservoir cap has weakened (117,000 miles on the jeep) and is venting my coolant out causing low levels... I cannot find any leaks, but the coolant smell is strong. When I first noticed it there was coolant around my fan.A bad radiator cap can explain this. If the cap opens at a lower pressure than what the cooling system is rated at then coolant will be released through the overflow tube once that pressure is achieved, which it will under normal operation. It seems to be getting worse as the coolant is turning a darker color all the time. I have removed the overflow tank and cleaned it out but after a couple times of use the coolant is back to the ...
