Often times this isn't related to the EGR but instead the MAF sensor (mass air flow). Also, a restriction in the air inlet tubes can be an issue as well. Remove the MAF sensor (see pic 1 below) and inspect it for dirt. I would service it and see if that makes a difference.

I forget the exact date but anything before sometime in 2012 must be replaced even if it doesn't report bad.
