You can get by just fine with Shrapnel Shot, but that requires aiming for the head to keep the buff going, and of course you'd have to have that mod. I'd stick with the regular Hek till you can get a good crit damage mod (i.e. better than Ravage), but once you get one I highly recommend the Vaykor variant.
